Our microbiology laboratories, which began operation in the late 1980s, have been offering contract research and analytical services since 1991 and have been GLP compliant since 1994. The type of work that we can accommodate encompasses the whole spectrum of microbiology, from routine analysis / quality control to substantial research and development programmes for major multinational clients.
"A major area of expertise is antimicrobial drug development, including human food safety of antibiotic residues. We are experienced in both traditional and novel techniques, and pride ourselves in our ability to develop bespoke test methods to suit specific customer requirements, while adhering to agreed deadlines and budgets."
Dr Andrew Pridmore, Head of Microbiology
Our team of microbiologists, with experience in food, water, environmental, pharmaceutical and clinical work, operates within our purpose- built laboratories. In line with the company’s product range, we have the skills and equipment to culture anaerobic and microaerophilic bacteria. We are also adept in cultivating fastidious organisms such as Mycoplasma and Brachyspira, and conducting antimicrobial susceptibility testing of these species.
The services that we offer include MIC and MBC testing, antimicrobial kill curves, determination of post-antibiotic effect, studies of the interaction between antimicrobial agents and the human intestinal microflora, antimicrobial resistance development, microbiological assays, animal feed analysis, bioburden testing of medical devices, bacterial identification, in vitro efficacy testing of antimicrobial wound dressings, preservative efficacy testing and disinfectant / biocide testing. As an example of our approach to bespoke test methods, we devised an in vitro simulation of the human gastrointestinal tract, which has been used to study the interaction between antimicrobial compounds or prebiotics and normal intestinal bacteria or probiotic organisms, following exposure to a series of conditions simulating passage through the GI tract.
In addition to our GLP compliance, we are able to comply with national and international standards as required, including BS / EN / ISO / ASTM test methods, BSAC, EUCAST and CLSI guidelines.
