World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

Celebrating World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development with Don Whitley Scientific

At Don Whitley Scientific Limited (DWS), we believe in the power of engineering to drive sustainable development and shape a better future for generations to come. As we celebrate UNESCO's World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, we reflect on our commitment to fostering innovation, nurturing talent, and advancing research that contributes to a more environmentally sustainable world.

Corporate sustainability and social mindfulness

One of the cornerstones of our dedication to sustainability is our longstanding Apprenticeship Scheme, which has been empowering young minds since its establishment in 2010. This scheme is more than just a vocational training program; it's a pathway for young people aged 16 to 21 to gain the skills and expertise needed to become the best in their field. By providing a combination of on-the-job training, education, and career progression opportunities, we are investing in the next generation of engineers and scientists who will drive sustainable development forward.

At DWS, our dedication to sustainability is further demonstrated by our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System accreditation. This standard highlights our pledge to environmental stewardship and underscores our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint.

In another of our partnerships and initiatives, we are actively engaged in environmental conservation efforts through the Oblong Trees scheme. Over the past four years, we have partnered with this scheme to plant an estimated 104,000 trees across the globe, including regions in Australia, Malawi, Peru, and the UK. This remarkable milestone underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability and our dedication to making a positive impact on the planet.

How our products are facilitating environmental sustainability

In line with our commitment to sustainability, we have worked with Celtic Renewables in Scotland to install multiple Whitley Workstations over the years. A recent installation marks another milestone in our partnership with Celtic Renewables, who is pioneering the use of low-carbon technology to convert locally sourced materials into sustainable biochemical products. By harnessing anaerobic bacteria cultured in our workstations, Celtic Renewables is leading the way in creating green chemicals that directly displace their petrochemical equivalents, contributing to a more sustainable processing industry.

But our commitment to sustainability doesn't stop there. We are also proud to collaborate with visionary minds like Azotic Technologies Ltd, who is dedicated to transforming the future of agriculture. By introducing natural alternatives to chemical fertilizers through N-fixing technology, Azotic Technologies is reshaping farming practices for a more sustainable future. We are honoured to provide equipment to support their groundbreaking research and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural industry.

As we celebrate World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, we are reminded of the pivotal role that engineering plays in driving positive change and shaping a more sustainable future. From nurturing the next generation of engineers through our Apprenticeship Scheme, to providing the equipment that facilitates groundbreaking research contributing to environmental sustainability, we are proud to be at the forefront of engineering innovation that makes a difference.

Together, we can build a more sustainable world for future generations to thrive in.
