Kathleen Boiten:

Kathleen Boiten is a PhD student focusing on clinical anaerobic bacteria at the Dutch Expertise Laboratory for Anaerobic Bacteria (DELAB) at the University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands.

Over the years, she has worked on mapping the antimicrobial resistance patterns of anaerobes, mainly of Bacteroides spp, and has used whole genome sequencing to detect the genomic basis of antimicrobial resistance. By detecting and characterizing anaerobic pathogens, she aims to improve understanding of the antimicrobial resistance of anaerobes, and the mechanisms causing transfer of this resistance.

Her team has worked on improving the identification of anaerobic bacteria with MALDI-TOF MS. They worked together with Bruker and multiple European anaerobic expertise laboratories on the ENRIA project, aiming to improve the Bruker MALDI-TOF MS database for the identification of the most important clinical anaerobes.

With 11 years of experience as a clinical lab technician in clinical bacteriology, combined with her PhD research, she has developed a broad perspective on both the diagnostics and research of anaerobic bacteria.
